2001 Watertown Cyclones
Basketball Team-Section III Class A Champions |
|
 |
|
The 2000-2001 Watertown Cyclones Boy's
Basketball Team made history as they won only their second
ever Section III class 'A' championship with a win over
Corcoran at Manley. The Cyclones had to wait 50 years as the
first Watertown team to win the Sectionals was during the
1950-1951 season. Watertown started off the season by
winning the Stop DWI Basketball Classic in Binghamton, NY.
Then they cruised through Frontier league play winning both
the league and playoff titles. The crowning achievement was
a convincing 69-49 win over Syracuse area powerhouse
Corcoran. Watertown's only loss came against
Schenectady, the eventual New York State Champion. Watertown
was coached by New York State Section III Hall of Famer Paul
Adams. The Cyclones were led by two all-state performers;
Matt Gorman who would go on to play and win a national title
at Syracuse University and Sid Pond played for Division II
Le Moyne College, Syracuse. |
